Hello you,

I am Bhagyashree (bhaag-yuh-shree).

I know it’s a mouthful, but I’m sure you’ll get it.

I was born in one of the world’s busiest cities - Dilli, or as our white friends named it– New Delhi. And I suspect that city will always explain at least a little bit about me.

I studied Political Science at the University of Delhi before moving across the world to Vancouver to study journalism at the University of British Columbia. I always like to think it this way: “I was 10,570 km away from home but 1 step closer to my dreams.”

Somewhere between the two, I realized I was less interested in having answers than I was in asking better questions.

I’m endlessly curious about people. Why we believe what we believe. The things we inherit from our families, cultures and politics. Who we become when we fall in love. Why we stay. Why we leave. What the internet is doing to all of us. The things everyone seems to be thinking about but nobody quite wants to say out loud.

I grew up around politics, then studied it, and eventually became more interested in the people living underneath it. Journalism gave me permission to be nosy for a living. Writing gave me somewhere to put all the questions that followed me home.

My work has moved between journalism, editorial storytelling and communications, and I’m increasingly less interested in putting myself neatly into one of those boxes.

And then there's Barfi, my small dog, who has somehow become a central character in my life and would probably object to being relegated to the final paragraph of this biography.

Mostly, though, I like paying attention.

To people. To contradictions. To tiny moments. To the gap between the lives we're supposed to want and the ones we actually do. To the things that make me laugh, bother me, confuse me or stay in my head long enough that I eventually have to make something out of them.
